How Sports Signage Enhances the Game Day Experience

By College Signage, High School Signage

Think back to the best sporting events you’ve been to. You probably remember the crowd, the people you were with, the key plays and the atmosphere surrounding it all.

And as you envision these venues, they most likely share something in common: signage.

From high school to college, and all the way up to professional leagues, signs at sporting events make a lasting impression on spectators and add to the overall game day experience. While people show up for the actual game, there’s no denying the impact the ambiance of a location can have.

Examples of Game Day Signage

One of the best ways to use custom signage at a sporting event is by highlighting a team’s motto or values.

Perhaps the most famous example of a sign is the University of Notre Dame’s “Play Like A Champion Today” sign.

According to ESPN, the sign was put into place by Coach Lou Holtz, who told his players to hit it and remind themselves of those who came before them and made sacrifices to help them. Since then, the sign has been merchandised and become a famous part of their program.

Another instance of a famous display comes from Texas A&M University. As the school points out, their fan base has been called “The 12th Man” since 1922. To honor this moniker, they have installed permanent lettering in the stadium, creating a sense of togetherness and pride with their team and supporters.

These examples, and numerous others, illustrate how something as simple as a sign, banner or wrap can create an atmosphere that not only welcomes in spectators, but helps boost the morale of the players.

Sports Signage Options

At the HS Sign Shop, we’ve made signs and banners for all sorts of sporting events, from small high school tournaments all the way up to South Dakota State University’s College GameDay display.

And while you may not be looking for a massive, revolutionary display, there’s still plenty of options to create an exciting game day atmosphere.

One of the most common displays you’ll see are individual player displays. These can be printed on banners, wraps or signs so they can fit in any location and maximize the canvas space of a venue.

Another option is to wrap the walls of a gym with the school’s logo or fight song, creating a permanent display that can leave a legacy for generations.

School Signage in Big Spaces: Big Thinking and Big Impact

By College Signage, High School Signage

As schools look to open up in some form in this unique year, HS Sign Shop is busy creating graphics, signage, sign design and more for high schools and colleges.

We’re helping schools kick off the year in a big way.

More than Just Banners or Posters

When you think of signs, you may think of something that’s flat on a surface. For example, it could be a Tigers mascot vinyl sign hanging on the wall. Or it could be a fabric banner outside the entrance to your school.

College Signage at Mount Marty UniversityHS has installed countless shapes and sizes for area schools and colleges, many of which make a big impact in a unique way.

Mount Marty University’s Benedict’s Cafe is a great campus location for students to gather, have a coffee, study or hang out. HS was challenged with branding this fun common location in an impactful way.

Two central pillars sat in the middle of the common space. They, of course served architectural function, but were otherwise plain beige structures. The HS Sign Shop team seamlessly wrapped the pillars in Lancer blue and yellow with the Mount Marty name.

The two columns now serve as artistic centerpieces and a point of pride for their growing student body.

Big Signage Makes Big Impact in Other Ways

Branding a school and showing your pride is important, but school signage, especially on the college level, makes an impact in other ways, too.

  • Makes students and staff feel at home
  • Impresses visitors, alumni and donors
  • And can even intimidate that sports team rival

Our team has gotten very familiar with these large glass windows on the campus of South Dakota State University.

When ESPN’s College GameDay came to town, we installed massive football player graphics as a showcase background element to their broadcast production. More recently we installed a “Welcome Back Jackrabbits” design to the windows.

Not Just for Universities, High Schools Benefit from Signage Too

When we talk about big, we’re talking about impressions, not necessarily budget. An impactful sign doesn’t have to be out of reach for a high school or middle school either.

Harrisburg High School challenged our team with branding their football stadium — and yes — intimidating their rivals some, too. As visitors enter from the west, they are greeted by the eyes of the prized Harrisburg Tiger.

The installation required three people to hang, an 86-foot boom lift, and a lot of patience with the wind. But the Sign Shop was up to the challenge.

Mount Marty, a college in Yankton, SD, reached out to the HS Sign Shop originally for an interior wall display two years ago. This custom display outlined the rich history of the nursing education program at the college.

Mount Marty liked what HS did for the nursing display series, and wished to continue working with our team on their next big endeavor: a full rebrand.

The design team worked with the HS Sign Shop to create a brand new logo and a series of custom signage across the campus.

Mount Marty College: Prime Example of HS Teamwork

For the project to be a true success, it required multiple minds from our HS Sign Shop and design team to work together. Thanks to our strong collaboration, we were able to create a fully integrated rebrand and installation plan for the Mount Marty campus.

Our team believes the rebrand is a prime example of teamwork at HS. Together, we put together a highly strategic launch of the rebrand right before classes began in the fall.

With brand verbiage such as “momentum” and “commitment”, the colors and designs had to stand out in a big way on campus. This required working with nearly all of the departments across Mount Marty for the concept creation to be a success.

After the concept of the logo design was complete, the HS Sign Shop worked backwards to figure out the physical installation. To begin, a visit to the location onsite is required.

Physical limitations of a space can make a world of difference for an installation of any kind.

Every space has benefits and limitations. Our HS Sign Shop crew knows what to look for prior to an install. For example, a building will likely be reinforced with lines from columns or beams that can shape a display in a pleasing way. Or, a wall exhibits a repeating pattern that can be mimicked on the sign.

The goal is to create a cohesive end product that integrates well with the surroundings and unique elements of a space.

Before the actual installation, the HS Sign Shop figures out all of the details beforehand. This makes the work go much more smoothly. In fact, roughly 90% of the work is done with planning before the installation takes place.

After months of working out the details, the installation only took three days to complete.

HS Sign Shop installed over 30 pole banners throughout campus, updated all of the monument signs and added dimension and excitement to prominent college buildings like the Cimpl Basketball Arena and Roncalli Welcome Center.

Fall Students Immersed with Newly Rebranded College Signage

One of the biggest factors when a student is choosing a school is the way the campus makes them feel. Bold colors and a powerful brand consistent throughout campus can make the difference.

The Mount Marty campus successfully welcomed students attending fall classes with a new logo and feel all across campus. Contact the HS Sign Shop to learn more about what we can do for your campus!
